WSU Children's book fair & Dr. Seuss Night

A children’s book fair will be held Feb. 22-March 2 at Washington State University and will include a March 1st celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The buy-one, get-one-free Scholastic book fair will take place 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday on the second floor of Cleveland Hall.

The Cat in the Hat will make a special appearance at "Family Night,” a celebration of author Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The event will take place 5:15-7 p.m. Thursday, March 1st, also on the second floor. Open to children ages 3-10, the party will be hosted by the Student Washington Education Association Educator’s Club. The book fair also will be open then. The children will be able to enjoy snacks, read books, make Cat in the Hat hats and play a Dr. Seuss-themed game. There will be different readers throughout the evening.

Cleveland Hall is on the west side of the WSU campus, at the corner of Idaho Street and College Avenue. Parking is free after 5 p.m.

The pictures on the block are just printed onto normal printer paper (not photo) because it is easier to work with. You don't have to add pictures but if you do bring them. You can either size them down (blocks are 3.5") or just bring the original size and the use the blocks to trace the area on the picture and cut it out. If you have any specific scrapbook paper you want to use bring that as well. We'll provide the letters for you.

Escrip Sign-Ups and other announcements

For those of you who didn't have your safeway card with you today, please go to http://www.escrip.com/ to sign up to get PSILU some "free" money so we don't have to raise tuition in the future. If you just use your phone number to save at Safeway, and you don't know where your card is, you can call Safeway at 877-723-3929 and they can look up your card number for you. Once you have your card number, go to escrip's website and click on "sign up" to get started. You can also submit credit cards and they will donate money depending on how much you spend, but if you don't want to do that, just click next and it will take you on to the confirmation screen. Also, if you want to split up your donation to more than one school, then you can add up to three different choices (although I recommend just giving it all to PS).

Also, there was an announcement about Time Out for Women that will be held at the Spokane Convention center on April 20-21st. If you are interested in getting discounted tickets to the full event (you can just buy tickets for Saturday only if you want, but they aren't discounted), let me know so we can buy them at the same time and save money. It is sponored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, so there will be some religious references, but they gear it to women of all faiths and I promise you they won't try to baptize you while you are there. There are motivational speakers as well as some inspirational musical groups. I have been before when it was in Seattle and it is very uplifting and helps energize you so you can be a better mom. Plus it's just fun to get away from the kids for a day or two and hang out with your friends. For more information, check out the website at http://www.tofw.com/ . I have a dvd of some of the talks from two years age that you can borrow to watch and see if it is something you would like to attend.

Finally, since we did have have a shortfall of budget last year, due to decreased enrollment and fewers escrip funds donated, we need to think about fundraisers that we could do to help boost our budget and avoid tuition increases. If you have any ideas, please let Alex know. One of the easiest things we can all do is get more moms coming. So be sure to let your friends know how awesome PS is so that they can enjoy this wonderful group as well.

Craft Fair

This Saturday is the craft Fair at Clarkston High School from 9-3. Danielle and I both have booths. Danielle is selling hair bows, bow holders, cake pops, Christmas count downs and Christmas tiles. I will be selling hairbows and headbands for girls of all ages.

Boo! at the BellTower 125 SE Spring St, Oct. 30th 1-3pm Trick or treat stations, candy costumes and a haunted house! Free event, but you can bring a can of food to donate to food bank if you want.

LDS Church Trunk or Treat --Friday, October 28th, 6:15pm at Decagon Devices parking lot in back (next to science center). Trunk or treating will start at 6:30, but arrive by 6:15 to park. Bring treats to pass out and decorate your trunk for a chance to win a prize! Also another one at LDS Church (across from Beasley) at 7pm.

Pumpkin Party for Girls! --Wednesday, October 26th 6-8pm at 805 NE Ruby Street. Decorating pumpkins and making Halloween decorations. Light snack provided. Please RSVP to kdgirlscouts@hotmail.com. You do not need to be a girl scout to attend. It is free! Hosted by Kappa Delta at WSU.

On Campus Carnival--McCrosky Hall (corner of Campus St and Veterans Way). Saturday, October 29th 2-4pm. Carnival booths, face painting, in-hall trick-or-treating, prizes. costumes encouraged!

Parks & Rec Halloween Carnival --For kids ages 2-6. Held at Pioneer Center (240 SE Dexter) on October 31st from 4:30-6:30pm. Admission $1 for child, parents free.

Spooky Splash--Pullman Aquatic Center, Friday, October 5:15-9:00. $4 per person.

Not a Halloween event, but on Saturday, October 29th, 9am-2pm is the Little Dresses for Africa event where they are making dresses out of pillowcases. If you have fabric or pillowcases to donate, bring them with you, but there will be some there to help out with as well. Held at Simpson UMC fellowship hall.

Here is Brent Owens, the handy man, telephone number 509-715-9799. He is very meticulous in his work. I highly recommend him. He doubled my storage space in my pantry. I already have it full of stuff. He does kitchen and bath remodels and other carpenter jobs. Next, he is going to put shelves in my garage. He also sells amazing bird houses at Prune Orchard.

Cleaning Day Fun!!!

A big thanks to Becky and Christal for keeping us organized on cleaning day last week and helping us to get the gym cleaned faster than ever. Another thanks to Erin for showing her great halloween ideas. She gave us some great make-up tips and showed us how to use a pillow case and some markers for a multitude of costume ideas. I especially loved the no-sew tutu idea. And finally thanks to Laurel and little Madeline for being great models. Just goes to show you how much fun cleaning can be when you do it with friends!!!

Tuesday, the 18th is our next craft day. We are making wreaths using burlap.

This is just one of many styles you can create. These materials will be provided for you, the black, orange, and tan burlap and also the black net and the jute string.

If you have a glue gun, please bring it. Also, this wreath I made just using straight pins to hold it together so if you have pins you want to use please bring those. If you have others fabrics and accessories you would like to use please feel free to bring them. There are really so many different ways to create these... each one can be very unique.

Weekend Fun and Notes from Dr. Sept!

I hope you all had a great weekend. I know some of us moms had great fun at Tokyo Seoul on Saturday night and I even stepped out of my comfort zone and tried some eel which was surprisingly good. So a big thanks to Becky for putting that together and to Kim for helping us understand the menu! Also, I took notes last week when Dr. Karen Sept at Palouse Pediatric Dentistry was giving her presentation, but forgot to post them so here they are now.

Dr Sept recommends first visit at age one. Before age two, use non-fluoridated toothpaste such as: Spry or xylitol pastes (contains natural sugar from the birch tree, kills bacteria that causes tooth decay) can be purchased at the Moscow co-op. Adults can also use the Spry gum, Sprax candy with Xylitol (great candy to use for bribes).

If you live out in the country, you should test your well water for fluoride content. Moscow and Pullman cities both have fluoridated water already. http://www.shop3m.com($19)/, another option to buy bottled fluoridated water which can be easier that trying to get kids to take flouride vitamins.

Saliva helps to fights cavities. At night, the saliva production goes way down and so night time feedings increase the risk of developing cavities. If needed use Spiffy wipes to clean off the teeth of little ones. Cheese also helps fight cavities, so eat up!!!

For our craft tomorrow we are making circle magnet boards and/or chalk boards using dollar store metal stove element covers (a set of 2 is only $1!) and everyone will get two, a large one and a small one. Super easy, cheap, and cute!

Everything will be provided for you but if you have some scrapbook paper that you want to use instead of what is available feel free to bring it. We'll also make a matching magnet or two. We are making our own chalkboard paint (also really easy) and you can make it whatever color you want to by adding paint. Hopefully this is something everyone will enjoy, either for yourself or as a gift.

Tips from Kathleen -- Children's Librarian

Kathleen sent us a lovely letter this week and included some tips about how to help reading to our children who are "mover and shakers." Here are her suggestions:

1. First of all, if you're wondering how to do this, pat yourself on the back! If you weren't already reading to your little ones, you wouldn't know to ask this question. So kudos to you for reading aloud!
2. It's very appropriate and normal for kids to be "on the go" at certain ages and stages. Their bodies have to move, need to move and want to move! So one of the best things we can do is honor that and LET THEM MOVE AND PLAY! As adults we need to remind ourselves (and each other) that "play" is the work of children.
3. If they are on your lap, and you're reading and they want to get down--I would suggest that you let them and then CONTINUE READING ALOUD! Sometimes this will interest them and they will come back and "check in" and listen a bit here and there. Also, even if they don't come back to you while you're reading, they are still within "earshot" and will take in words and phrases. You can also say, "Ok, we will stop reading for now, turn to the last page and say, "The End" and then "let it go."
4. You can sometimes grab their attention by making exaggerated sounds and noises as you read. They will often want to "tune in" when there's "more going on" than "usual."
5. You can also "sing" books to them. Don't worry about any tune--kids love music! They might be more willing and ABLE to sit if the story is a song! And there are a LOT of books that are made to be sung--let me know if you need titles.
6. You can also pick shorter books--like board books--that you can read in a very, very short amount of time and then they can still get up and move, etc.
7. Always be sure when they're getting more tired/settled (naptime and/or bedtime) that you read to them. They are physically able to listen more as their bodies are really slowing down. Now you can choose a bit longer story if you'd like, etc. Capitalize on this wonderful calmer time to share books together.

And of course, the two most important things:
1. Keep reading aloud every day/night.
2. Make it FUN for you and your child.

And finally, we can remind ourselves that "this too shall pass." As their bodies change, they will go through spurts and stages--more active, less actives, more active, less active. Breathe into each lovely stage (as much as we can!) and know that sooner or later our little ones will be "big ones". They will carry with them all the lovely experiences we've helped them have--especially the ones on our laps and baside us, with books! So make the moments happen--you are truly giving your child gifts and memories that will last a lifetime.

Documentary Focuses on Dark Side of Achievement Culture (Free Showing) Her knowledge of movies didn’t go beyond buying tickets. But when Vicki Abeles concluded that school-related stress was sickening her 12-year-old and millions of students nationwide, she decided to make a film. Her documentary, “The Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture,” will be shown at 6 p.m. April 14 in Washington State University’s Compton Union Building auditorium. It is the final presentation in the Rethinking Education film series sponsored by the WSU and University of Idaho colleges of education. The film and following panel discussion are free to the public. The panelists will include Erik Perryman, an assistant principal, and Charlene Jakich, a counselor, both from Moscow High School, Lali McCubbin, an associate professor of counseling psychology at WSU and Lisa Marquart, parent in the Pullman School District. Pullman High School students will be on hand to share their perspective. The moderator will be A.G. Rud, dean of the WSU College of Education. Abeles, a mother of three and former Wall Street attorney, said she made “The Race to Nowhere” after discovering that stress is harming students in every kind of school environment and community. “I saw kids who were anxious, depressed, physically ill, checking out, abusing drugs and, worst case, attempting suicide. I felt compelled to speak out about this crisis by making a film and giving voice to the students, teachers, and parents,” she said when the film was released last fall. “I wanted to expose a deeper truth about our education system," she said. "We are graduating a generation of robo-students, unable to think and work independently, creatively and collaboratively.” The filmmaker hopes to start a grassroots effort to change what she considers to be the status quo. In addition to parents and students, “The Race to Nowhere” features such education experts as Madeline Levine, clinical psychologist and author of "The Price of Privilege," Kenneth Ginsburg, adolescent medicine specialist, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; and Deborah Stipek, dean of the School of Education at Stanford University.

Scrapbooking for Julie

A number of friends of Julie McCoy’s have been helping her put together her family photos into scrapbooks as she goes through treatment for metastasized breast cancer. This has been a wonderful way for the family to preserve special memories as Julie continues to fight this disease.

People with no scrapbooking experience to those with more are welcome. Materials will be available as well as photos in easy to assemble “mini kits” put together by Julie. Extra trimmers, scissors, cutting tools, or other scrapbook supplies and paper you could bring would be helpful.

Pumpkin Dip

3/4 cup (6 oz) cream cheese

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

2 tsp maple syrup

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Mix cream cheese, brown sugar, and pumpkin well. Add remaining ingredients. Chill 30 minutes, then serve.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup oil

2 eggs

3/4 cup canned pumpkin

1/4 cup water

1 1/2 cup flour

3/4 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp cloves

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 chocolate chips (I usually add more!)

Mix sugar, oil, and eggs. Then add pumpkin and water. Mix dry ingredients together, then slowly add to wet mixture. Add chocolate chips. Fill cupcakes, bake. 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. *I baked the smaller muffins for 10 minutes*

Event Description

PULLMAN-(October 1-31) Come out and enjoy family fun at the first Corn Maze on the Palouse just outside of Pullman during the month of October.

The Corn Maze on the Palouse, located at 4932 Route 27, Pullman, will kick off on October 1 and will be open the first two weekends in October and every day during the last two weeks of the month from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission for adults is $5 and children under 12 are $3 each. Children age 2 and under are free.

Along with the corn maze, there will be games, a straw maze for younger children, family activities and food and drink vendors for concessions. All these activities are free; admission is only for the maze. Bring a flashlight for the maze and energy for a fun time.

Every Friday during the month, the corn maze will convert to a Freaky Friday Scare Maze from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. On October 31, the maze will open at 4 p.m. for family trick-or-treating. This will end at 6 p.m., and from 7 p.m. until midnight, prepare to be scared during Fright Night, a scarier version of the Freaky Friday Scare Maze.

Please bring your scrapbooking tools, paper and creative mind and make a page or more for Julie. Cindy will also be accepting small cash donations for Julie to purchase photo albums, page protectors, etc.

For Child Passenger Safety Week there will be a free community car seat check event at James Toyota (on the Moscow-Pullman Highway) from 10am-2pm. Certified car seat techs will help ensure your child(ren) are as safe as possible in the car. They'll check car seats & boosters for safety, and make sure they are installed properly and the correct choice for your child. They'll check that the children fit their car seats/boosters or seat belts properly.

Top Things You Might Not Know About Car Seats

Did you know…

Every vehicle is different; every car seat is different; every child has different needs. Almost every parent can learn something new about the proper installation and use of their child(ren)’s car seat(s). · Car seats expire

· Children should never wear heavy coats, buntings or snowsuits in car seats or boosters

· Harnesses should be snug

Colfax Fair Information

If you are interested in going to the Colfax Fair this weekend, here is some info. The fairgrounds are located on the far side of Colfax, across from the airport road turnoff (5 miles west on SR26). The hours are Thurs-Saturday 8am-9pm, and Sunday 8-5pm. There is a carnival in the afternoon/evenings and a rodeo on Friday and Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon. There is fee for admission but Friday is family day so your whole family can get in for $15. On Thursday evening the carnival ride all day passes ($18) are 2 for 1 (or get them early at the Grange in Pullman for $14. For more information, go to www.palouseempirefair.org. Stop by the pig barn and say Hi to us. And don't forget to visit Old McDonald's Barn to pets some fun farm animals. Hope to see you there!

Cake Decorating Tips & Recipes

Vickie kindly shared the following tips with us today:

To basic cake mixes, add 1 t. vanilla and 1 T. meringue powder. The meringue will add some stability and lift to the baked cake (Plus, I add just a smidge more oil than requested - just over the line on the measuring cup). Preferred cake mix: Betty Crocker

Use bake-even strips to keep cakes level.

For any cake more than about 10" in diameter, lower baking temperature to 335 degrees and increase baking time by 5-10 minutes - or until done.

For any cake more that 10" diameter, put a flower nail - sprayed with Pam - in the center to radiate heat out form the center - helps with even baking.

Regardless of what it says on the cake mix box, ALWAYS, spread your pans with shortening and a layer of flour to keep cake from sticking.

Icing:

Use thinned icing to ice the cake smooth. The meringue powder will create a soft "crust" that will allow you to place a sheet of wax paper on top and gently smooth the icing.

NEVER re-use a toothpick once it's been in the color gel - re-using it will contaminate the gel.

Use star tips to fill in almost any pattern. Outline with tip 3, then fill with stars.

Put any writing on the cake FIRST so you don't run out of room while you're decorating.

If you need to practice your pattern/writing placement, use the bottom of the pan you used to bake the cake - just flip it upside down & you've got the same size/shape area to decorate.

Use a paint trowel to smooth icing.

Don't fill icing bags more than half full.

Basic tips: 3 (writing), 16&21 (star), 352 (leaves)

Use pudding cups as filling or ask to buy fruit fillings at bakeries.

To transfer a pattern onto a cake: put wax paper over pattern, trace with piping gel, then flip wax paper onto cake pressing down gently. Fill pattern in with icing using a star tip.

Join us for our annual White Elephant Holiday party! We will have a lovely buffet dinner at Smokey Mountain Pizza ($10.99 per person, plus drinks and gratuity) starting at 5:30. Afterwards, we will have our gift exchange. Please bring a gift, wrapped but not labeled (DO NOT BUY ANYTHING). Gift can be as classy or as tasteless as you like (old toys, household items, strange paintings, homemade crafts etc).
Menu: We will have a buffet-type dinner with house salad, teriyaki chicken fettucine, lasagna, Greek penne, vegetarian penne, and pizza (The Ultimate, Valley Veg, Primavera, and Garlic Chicken). Garlic bread is also provided.

Alternative Giving Market and LIght Up the Night Holiday Parade

Kick off the holiday season on Wednesday, December 2nd (rain or shine) with the Alternative Giving Market and Light Up the Night Holiday Parade in downtown Moscow.

The Alternative Giving Market has been moved inside to Pritchard Art Gallery and there will be volunteers at Friendship Square directing you to the correct location.

Holiday Business Fair

There will be a Holiday Business Fair this Thursday in Colfax. You can come enjoy local vendors, yummy snacks, and get some christmas shopping done. Some of the vendors attending include; Pampered Chef, Miche Bags, Mary Kay, Premier Jewelry, Arbonne, Scentsy and many more. It will be at the Colfax Community Bible Church at 1185 W Fairview Colfax WA -across from the hospital from 5:30 to 9:00PM. Should be lots of fun, and we will be having it again on Thursday Dec 3rd. Sheri Wadsworth, our fellow PS mom-craft expert-Stampin' Up demonstrator, will show us how to make cards and a gift tag using Stampin' Up products. Come have fun, learn new ideas and techniques and start your Christmas shopping.
All proceeds will go to the PS I Love You craft/art closet

Face Painting for Kids

Where: Pine Street plaza. It's the nice cobblestone area between Lilly Bee's and Taco del Mar downtown, by the bridge.Face Painting will be done by members of the Pullman High School Theater and Drama students.
We will have a list of ideas, but also will take requests. All proceeds will go to PHS Theater & Drama

*I will be passing around a sign up sheet for the photo fundraiser and we will need a "yes" or "no" answer from each of you so we can gauge the level of interest.

Tuesday, May 19 will be the end of semester picnic at Klemgard park at 10:30 am. Bring a dish to share and plates/utensil and drinks for you and your kids. In honor of Mother’s Day we are inviting you to be part of something great! We are hosting a Purse & Dessert Party in honor of Krissy Schulze-Makuch is a 5 year old boy who has been battling cancer over the last year. His parents own Cooky’s Deli and have been struggling to build a business while taking their son to Spokane for treatment.

Purse Party is Sunday (Mother’s Day!) – at the Daily Grind and Cooky’s Deli from 11am to 2pm!!

Pullman Civic Theatre Audition Call -- Charlotte's Web

Pullman Civic Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for the summer classic, Charlotte's Web. Auditions will be held at Nye Street Theatre on April 27 and 28, with callbacks on the 29th, at 6:30 p.m. each night. Performances will be July 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 at 7:30pm and July 19 and 26 at 2:00pm.

This show has a wide range of characters and ages. We will be casting children and adults. There is a medium-sized cast with a wide range of speaking and non-speaking roles. Many opportunities for roles as farm animals that can be played by younger cast members. Some roles WILL be double and even triple cast – be prepared to read for multiple roles. Please go to pullmancivictheatre.org for specific character descriptions. A perusal copy of the script is available at Neill Public Library.

Those auditioning only need to attend one evening, and will be notified if they need to come to the callback. The youngest children will audition first, and be allowed to leave once they are finished.

A Knight Fit For a Princess or Prince

An evening hosted by WSU's Panhellenic Association (sororities and fraternities). This evening is aimed for children ages 4 to 8 and includes carnival games, face painting, snacks, crafts, and the movie Enchanted will be playing!

This is an evening to help bring out the inner princess every little girl has AND...This is an evening to help bring out the mighty prince every little boy has.

Where: Smith Gym - on the WSU campus.

When: Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 5-8pm

Price: $5 per child for an evening full of fun!
